Rosemary Pountney, 1937 to 2016

We are very sorry to announce that Rosemary Pountney has died. She has been one of our most distinguished and engaged Honorary Fellows bringing her personality and distinction to St Anne’s in equal measure.  She was an actor before coming to St Anne’s as a mature student to read English and then studying for a doctorate in the late 1960s. She was arguably the foremost scholar and critic of Samuel Beckett; her book Theatre of Shadows regarded as one of the definitive works on Beckett’s drama. She began performing Beckett’s one woman plays whilst working on her thesis and made many tours worldwide performing and lecturing on Beckett.

In recent years, she has been a great presence in College and all who knew her will remember her friendliness and her support of people at all stages of their careers and her interests across intellectual boundaries.

The funeral service will be at Pusey House Chapel, Oxford at 3.15pm on Friday 15 April.

Family flowers only. Dress: Jolly

Donations, if desired, to “Cancer Research UK – in memory of Rosemary Pountney”.

St Anne's will look for an appropriate occasion to mark her life and work and contribution to the College.
