Dr Peter Judge, St Anne’s Lecturer, and his colleague from the Oxford University Biochemistry Department, Prof. Tony Watts, have just returned from a rewarding three days at the annual ‘Think Science’ festival in Dubai. The Emirates Foundation hosted 15,000 UAE school students, many of whom presented their own research projects during the event at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Several hundred students joined Dr Judge and Prof. Watts each day for hands-on demonstrations and experiments, discovering the physical principles behind X-ray diffraction and its application to proteins and investigating the roles of light-harvesting pigments in photosynthesis. The two tutors were joined ‘down the line’ by Caitriona Woolhouse from the University’s Admissions Office, for a presentation on applying to UK universities, which exploded some of the common myths and misconceptions surrounding interviews and other aspects of the process of applying to Oxford.
During their visit, Dr Judge and Prof. Watts were honoured to be invited to represent Oxford University at a garden party at the British Embassy in Dubai, hosted by the Consul General and his wife, to celebrate the Queen’s 91st birthday.
