Tim Gardam steps down as Principal

On Wednesday 31 August, Tim Gardam officially stepped down as Principal to start his new role as take up the post of Chief Executive of the Nuffield Foundation after twelve years at St Anne’s.

Since Tim’s arrival in 2005, the College’s endowment has increased from £19 million to £34 million thanks largely to legacies and generous donations. Fellowships in Philosophy, Classics, Earth Sciences and Politics have been endowed. Additional Fellows have been appointed in Computer Science, Earth Science, Economics, Materials, Education, Film Aesthetics and Medical Sciences. The student body has increased in size (most notably the number of graduate students which has doubled) and comes from a far wider geographical range thanks to outreach initiatives in Asia. Undergraduates are reading a wider range of disciplines. St Anne’s has raised sufficient endowment thanks to the generosity of its supporters and alumnae to cover the substantial part of its Bursary costs. It invariably has more student qualifying for bursaries than any other college. St Anne’s has defined itself by its commitment to opportunity, to collaboration, and to an diverse international community opening up a wide range of experiences and possibilities for all our students.

On leaving, Tim Gardam said:

'I will always feel very close to St Anne’s and will follow its fortunes with great interest and pride. I have absolutely no doubt the College will continue to flourish in the years ahead and wish you all the very best.'
