Academic Background:

MA and MSci in Natural Sciences (Pembroke College, University of Cambridge, 2000–04); DPhil in Materials Science (Linacre College, University of Oxford, 2004–08); Research Fellow (Department of Materials, University of Oxford 2008–present); Non-Stipendiary Lecturer in Materials (St Anne’s College, University of Oxford, 2009–present).

Teaching Interests:

Prelims:

  • Crystallography and Diffraction
  • Defects in Crystals
  • Ceramics and Semiconductors
  • Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Electrochemistry
  • Metallography

Finals:

  • Surfaces and Interfaces
  • Diffusion
  • Ceramics and Glasses
  • Microplasticity

Research Interests:

I work primarily on ceramic materials, and particularly correlating the effect of systematic alterations to microstructure and composition on changes in macroscopic structural, mechanical and electrical properties. My DPhil thesis was on the superconducting material magnesium diboride; since completing this I have also worked on the characterisation of zirconium oxide growth layers on zirconium metal, and on functionally graded ceramic materials.

I am currently studying the deformation and fracture mechanisms of ceramic materials used for vehicle and body armour, in order to correlate material properties with behaviour under impact at very high strain rates.
