Academic Background:

Dr Elizabeth Baigent is the University Reader in the History of Geography, the Senior Tutor (SCIO) at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, an Associate Editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and a lecturer in Geography at St Anne’s College. From 1993 to 2003 she was the Research Director of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (DNB) and a research lecturer at the University of Oxford, and before that held research fellowships at the universities of Oxford, Johns Hopkins, Stockholm, and Muenster. She is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (1992), the Royal Historical Society (2003), the Society of Antiquaries (2004), and the Higher Education Academy.

As well as writing extensively on geographers, cartographers, and travellers for the DNB, Dr Baigent maintains independent research interests in historical geography. She works on the history of cartography, partly in conjunction with the forest research group of the School of Geography and the Environment, the history of geography, and emigration. She is a founder convenor of The Oxford Seminars in Cartography, a series now in its 17th year which is organized in conjunction with the Bodleian Library. She served from 1995 to 2000 on the editorial board of the Historic Towns Atlas Trust (the UK arm of an international research project for whose German arm she has also worked) and is a trustee of the Harley Fellowships.
