Robert Chard acts as Personal Tutor to all students in College reading Oriental Studies.

Teaching Interests:

Undergraduate:
Classical Chinese language, ancient Chinese history and Daoist religion. Early Historical Texts (Zuo zhuan, Shi ji, Han shu, Hou Han shu, Sanguo zhi).

Graduate:
Postgraduate seminars in Classical Chinese texts.

Research Interests:

The history of Chinese popular religion and magical beliefs; early medieval Chinese history and the use of literary compositions for political purposes; political and military history of the Six Dynasties period; the Confucian ritual canon and its implementation in the state cults of the Imperial period; modern martial arts novels (wuxia xiaoshuo).
