
Susan Smith took her BA in Geography at St Anne’s, studying here from 1974 to 1977. She subsequently did a DPhil at Nuffield College, and held a Research Fellowship at St Peter’s. She was appointed to the Ogilvie Chair of Geography at Edinburgh University in 1990. In 2004 she moved to Durham where she played a key role in establishing the Institute of Advanced Studies. In 2008 she became a Fellow of the British Academy, and in October 2009 she took office as Mistress of Girton College, Cambridge.
She has published widely in the field of social geography, with a consistent emphasis on questions of inequality and urban segregation. She has focused particularly on the inter-disciplinary area of housing studies, publishing on race and housing, on housing and health, and on crime in British cities.
