St Anne's College South of England Branch welcomes St Anne's alumnae from Hampshire, Sussex and surrounding counties in the south.

We are a friendly and active branch of St Anne's Society with members from quite a wide area in the South of England. Many of our members live in Hampshire and Sussex and most of our events take place in or near Winchester and Chichester, but we also have members from Dorset, Surrey and Wiltshire.

We organise four or five social events a year; recently we enjoyed group visits to Pallant House Gallery and the Festival Theatre in Chichester, Gertrude Jekyll’s garden in Hampshire, guided walks round the New Forest and Wren Churches in London. Visiting speakers have included Karen Armstrong, Georgina Ferry and Fellows of St Anne’s who talked about their research. One of our members provided a fascinating hands-on exploration of the world of science: ‘The Mad Scientist’s Tea Party’, which was much enjoyed by an audience ranging from 9 to 90, and another of our members will organise a talk in October on working with children with post-traumatic stress disorder overseas. We have a thriving book group which meets twice a year and have recently started a music group so members can visit concerts together.

We feel it’s important to provide time for members and their guests to meet and socialise, as well as to be entertained and stimulated. Most of all we feel that the unique friendliness of St Anne’s should be reflected in what we do. We also try to raise funds for the St Anne’s Bursary Fund, and have given over £3,000 since 2006. But friendship, rather than fund raising, is our main priority. The annual membership subscription is £10 which is used for administrative costs and for the freshers’ welcome lunch held in Winchester each year, where those about to start at St Anne’s can meet current undergraduates from our area.
