Dear Friend,
I am delighted to introduce to you this guide, which I hope will be of real help to those wishing to remember St Anne’s in their wills.
The College, from its earliest beginnings as the Society for Home Students, has always been most fortunate in the support it has received from its alumnae and friends.
Our library, our student accommodation, our bursary and scholarship awards, our teaching excellence – all stand as testament to the foresight and generosity of our predecessors.
It is impossible to imagine St Anne’s being in the confident position it is today without their bequests.
Now, as never before, St Anne’s needs our help if future generations of students are to benefit from the educational opportunities we all enjoyed. When I was an undergraduate here, higher education was free; I had a maintenance grant; the ‘gold standard’ that is the Oxbridge tutorial system was assured.
The old certainties are gone. We can, of course, regret their passing; more importantly, we can recognise our responsibility to the young people of today and tomorrow, and ensure that St Anne’s can continue to offer them the best possible start in life.
I have included St Anne’s in my will to express my support and affection for the College in all it strives to achieve. I invite you to do the same.
With best wishes,
Baroness Ruth Deech (Fraenkel, 1962)
Fellow & Tutor in Law, 1970-91
Principal, 1991-2004
