Classics Fellowship

The Hubbard Fellowship in Classical Languages and Literature

The Classics School at St Anne’s has a strong and proud history. The last ten years have been among the most successful we have known and there is every reason to look forward to a happy future. Yet the current round of cuts to public spending in Higher Education, and the ongoing uncertainty over how universities are to be funded, require us to work together. St Anne’s has launched a Classics Campaign with the aim of raising £2 million in order to ensure the endowment of the post of Tutor in Classical Languages and Literature, which is currently held by Professor Matthew Leigh.

The Fellowship will be named in memory of A.E. Hubbard, the father of Miss Margaret Hubbard. Miss Hubbard served as Tutor in Classical Languages and Literature at St Anne’s from 1957 to 1986 and was elected to an Honorary Fellowship of the College in 2007. Her achievements are recognised throughout the world of classical scholarship.

Should we achieve our aim, we will secure the post against the uncertainties of public funding and will ensure the survival of what has become a distinctive and highly successful community of scholars within the Oxford Classics Faculty.

The appeal for the Fellowship was launched at the Classics Reunion on 19th February 2011. You can read the speech given by the Principal, Tim Gardam, and also the speech given by Matthew Leigh to launch the appeal.

At the reunion, the seminar on Costume in Greek Tragedy given by Dr Rosie Wyles and Costume in Roman Comedy given by Matthew Leigh were recorded and these are both available on iTunes.
