International Academic Programmes › 2014: Hong Kong Summer School

Hong Kong Summer School, 21 - 25 July 2014

The 2014 St Anne's Hong Kong Summer School was a resounding success. It was a 'first' for the College and indeed for the University of Oxford and St Anne's is grateful to the generous support of our donors: Mr and Mrs Patrick Huen and their daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs Bernard Man (Bernard Man, St Anne's, Jurisprudence, 1995). We were wonderfully hosted by Diocesan Boys' School in Mong Kok, of which Mr Bernard Man is an alumnus.

The main Summer School gave 188 students (14-16 year olds) from over 40 Hong Kong schools the opportunity to spend five days working with St Anne's academic Fellows, tutors and graduate students. The topics offered included: Classical China and Classical Chinese (Dr Robert Chard); Contrasts in the Sea (Professor Martin Speight and Dr Michelle Taylor); DNA: Molecule Mysteries (Professor David Harris and Dr Peter Judge); Extreme Environments (Professor Don Porcelli and Dr Nick Middleton); History - Reform, Resistance and Expansion (Dr Sophie Nicholls); International Legal Order (Professor Antonios Tzanakopoulos); Music and Our Daily Lives (Dr Alexander Binns); Neuroscience: How to Build a Brain (Professor Francis Szele and Dr Osama Al Dalahmah); Photons, the Universe & Higgs-Hunting (Professor Neville Harnew and Mr Chris Willman). The students appreciated the level of interaction between tutors and students, and enjoyed being encouraged to debate and ask questions, and learning from each other.

In addition, 160 older students attended the supplementary programme of talks about studying at Oxford and about critical thinking skills, run by Dr Anne Mullen. There was also a careers panel chaired by Bernard Man and other Hong Kong alumnae, who provided illuminating and refreshing perspectives of their time at St Anne's and their rich and rewarding careers.
