International Academic Programmes › 2016: Hong Kong Summer School

Hong Kong Summer School, 18 - 21 July 2016

In Summer 2016, 180 students from across Hong Kong were given the opportunity to attend the St Anne’s College Summer School, held in collaboration with The Chinese University of Hong Kong, from 18 – 21 July 2016.

The Summer Schools continue to raise aspirations, through giving local 15 and 16-year-old students the unique opportunity to experience University-style teaching, in subjects outside the standard school curriculum.

We are most grateful to Mr and Mrs Patrick Huen, Mr and Mrs Bernard Man (Bernard Man, St Anne's, Jurisprudence, 1995), and Mr and Mrs Ian Huen for their continued support of our Academic Summer Schools in Hong Kong.

We also extend our thanks to our colleagues at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, who hosted the summer school, and worked with us to produce an exciting and inspiring programme for the students.

We are again hugely grateful to our Fellows, Lecturers and Graduate Students, for their hard work in producing fantastic lessons for the students:

Biochemistry - Prof David Harris and Dr Peter Judge

Geography and Earth Sciences - Prof Don Porcelli and Dr Nick Middleton

Law - Prof Antonios Tzanakopoulos

Materials Science - Dr David Collins & Dr Edmund Tarleton

Mathematics - Dr Graham Nelson & Dr Michal Przykucki

Music - Dr John Traill & Miss Frankie Perry

Neuroscience - Prof Francis Szele & Miss Yichen Li

Physics - Prof Neville Harnew & Miss Faye Cheung

After class, colleagues from CUHK ran special sessions for the Summer School participants to see first-hand the fantastic facilities on their campus. Visits included the Moot Court, a Dissecting Laboratory, Institute of Space and Earth Information Science and the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change. The Principal also spoke to 40 Summer School Students as part of the Leadership Skills session, run by the Prefects of Dicoesan Boys’ School.

The Senior Tutor and Vice-Principal also held a daily ‘Supplementary Programme’ of Oxford Explained talks, and critical thinking and interview skills sessions. These were aimed at older students, parents and teachers, who wanted to find out more about applying to Oxford University.

Two evening public lectures, held on 19 July, and run jointly with the Centre of Personalised Medicine and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, were given by Professor Dennis Lo, CUHK, and Professor Francis Szele, St Anne's.
