Allow for cool weather and rain in the autumn and winter, but bring clothes for going out at night too. If you have any formal evening wear, bring it with you - it will come in handy. If you don't have any, there is no need to go out and buy them, there are plenty of places where you can hire things here. There are also numerous clothes shops in Oxford, so don't feel you need to bring everything you possess - you may want to buy new things here, and then you will have the problem of getting it all home again at the end of your stay.
As you will not be matriculating, there is no need for you to purchase a gown or to have any specific formal clothing. However, if you would like to be in the freshers' photograph (taken on the day of the matriculation ceremony), you would need to have the following clothing with you (known in Oxford as 'sub fusc'):
Men: dark suit and socks (black or dark navy, not brown), black shoes, white shirt and white bow tie.
Women: dark skirt or trousers, black stockings or tights, black shoes, white blouse and black tie or ribbon.
If you decide to do this, you should speak to your student parent about borrowing a gown (don't go to the expense of buying one).
All bedding (including duvets) is provided in College. There is no need to bring your own. You will need to provide your own towels, but you may find it's easier to buy them here than to use up your precious baggage allowance.
It is worth bringing some extra passport-sized photos when you come in addition to the ones you have sent us for registration.
Bicycles are useful in Oxford, but can easily be sourced once you are here - speak to someone in the JCR about the best place to get one, and make sure you buy good-quality locks.
Study-bedrooms at St Anne's have high-speed network/internet access, so you may wish to bring a computer with you. Do first check whether your service contract/warranty covers its use in the UK and whether you will need a special adapter. If you find that your current computer will not be suitable (or you don't own one), don't worry. St Anne's has excellent IT facilities, including a large computing suite with computers, scanners and printers; there are further public machines available in the College library and the JCR common room.
