The Graduate Studies Office of the University handles all aspects of the graduate application process. Departments or faculties are the prime academic focus of graduate life. They are responsible for:

  • the admission of you as a graduate student;
  • the framing of degree and diploma courses;
  • teaching and/or supervision; and
  • examination.

First Steps

  •  research your postgraduate degree options using the department/faculty websites (see the links on our Postgraduate Study Options pages);
  • seek advice from current academic tutors;
  • make contact with potential supervisors here in Oxford ;
  • understand the Graduate Admissions Process (please consult the Oxford University website).

College Choice

The College community provides the environment in which graduates pass much of their day-to-day lives, and so constitutes a second focus for graduate life alongside that of the University faculty or department. At St Anne's you are very likely, at some stage, to live in College accommodation, and you will, of course, benefit from its social and leisure facilities; we hope you will benefit from personal and intellectual contact with a range of fellow graduates in all disciplines, as well as with the Principal and Fellows of the College.

St Anne's strengths for graduate students

  • Our research-active academic fellowship and professoriate attract sizeable numbers of postgraduate students in the following areas and we are keen to develop these further: Mathematics - Computer Science - Statistics, Materials Science, Engineering Science, English, Law, Educational Studies, Geography, Politics and International Relations....
  • We have a healthy number of Graduate Research Scholarships, Graduate Development Scholarships and £20,000 per year to support graduate travel and research. See the Financial Matters section of this website.
  • Our postgraduate body consists of one- and two-year Masters students, including PGCE, as well as postgraduate research students aiming for a DPhil.

The Tutor for Graduates, Dr Anne Mullen, is a Fellow of the College, and has overall responsibility for graduate members, and this covers academic problems, welfare and domestic matters – although as far as the latter are concerned, the MCR is, of course, represented on the relevant College committees.

More specifically, each graduate is allotted a College tutor in (or near) her or his subject field as an adviser within College. The role of the College adviser is distinct from that of the University supervisor and, so far as academic affairs are concerned, subordinate.

As in all such individual relations, it is up to the graduate to decide how much use she or he wishes to make of such an adviser; but if, as occasionally happens, things do not run smoothly between graduate and University supervisor, the College tutor may usefully intervene. It is not uncommon, however, for Supervisor and graduate student to be members of the same college.

College Selection Criteria for Graduates

St Anne’s College welcomes applications from prospective new graduate students for the courses listed on the University website. http://www2.admin.ox.ac.uk/progstudy/.  Once you have been offered a place at the University by your academic department or faculty, we assess your application. St Anne’s recognises that your Department or Faculty will be your formal academic home. St Anne’s academic community embraces all members, from our undergraduates, graduates, Tutorial Fellows, Research Fellows, and Professorial Fellows. How do we choose you?

  • Applications received in College are usually considered by academic staff in the relevant subject area and the Tutor for Graduates;
  • The College aims to offer places to those graduate applicants who are an academic fit for the subject range we offer;
  • We have a certain number of academic Fellows in each subject and therefore we do limit the number of fresher graduates in each subject in order to maintain a workable ratio of students to academic Fellows who act as Graduate Advisees;
  • We encourage early application to the University in order for you to be considered carefully and seriously – College places are limited, as are practical resources such as accommodation;
  • Any offer of a place will be subject to satisfactory financial evidence that you can meet the tuition and living costs for the full duration of your course. Please read carefully the University's guidance on the Financial Guarantee for more details.
