The Materials Department in Oxford is rated as excellent in both teaching and research, and St Anne's has a unique commitment to the subject with two tutorial fellows, one Research Professor in post, and another to be appointed.
Our main research interests lie in phase transformations, electronic materials and devices (semiconductors and superconductors), the biomaterials/physical science interface and the development of analytical techniques.
The support offered to Materials undergraduates is personal and enthusiastic. The majority of tutorial teaching in Single or Joint Schools is provided by the two tutors, the remainder of the teaching being given by specialists from other colleges.
The College Library has an superb collection of Materials textbooks and St Anne's students benefit further from being situated within a two-minute walk of the Materials Department.
Many St Anne's Materials students study the language option in French, German, Spanish or Oriental languages, and here again we have tutors in College for most subjects (see Modern Languages and Oriental Studies for details).
St Anne's is looking for candidates with an interest not only in the study of science at a fundamental level but also in its application in engineering and manufacturing industry. St Anne's students have achieved excellent degrees over the past several years and been very successful in going on into rewarding and challenging careers.
