Philosophy at Oxford is always studied alongside at least one other subject, and your teaching will be arranged in consultation with tutors in the other subjects.

One reason for this is that philosophy often has as its ‘subject matter’ issues of concern in other disciplines, so philosophy itself can be informed by studying within those other disciplines. It is also the case that learning how to do philosophy can help in structuring your arguments and developing your positions in other areas.

In the various schools, there are various obvious ‘overlaps’ or ‘bridge papers’. Courses in ancient philosophy (especially Plato and Aristotle) may be of special interest to classicists. For PPE students, there are courses in the Theory of Politics and the History of Political Thought. Those studying Mathematics and Philosophy may take a course in the Philosophy of Mathematics, and students in PPP can study the Philosophy of Mind. Philosophy and Modern Languages students often find interesting a course in Aesthetics, or courses concerning philosophers who wrote in the languages they study (Kant, Sartre, and so on). All of these options are open to all Philosophy students, and there is also the option of a philosophy thesis in Finals for those who wish to pursue a special interest in more depth.

Philosophy lectures and seminars are provided by the Faculty, which is one of the largest and most prestigious in the world.

The College Library is probably the best undergraduate philosophy library in the University, and we seek to buy multiple copies of widely used textbooks wherever possible. The College also provides excellent facilities for access to the increasing amount of online material.

Philosophy at St Anne’s is pursued in the spirit of the College as a whole, combining an insistence on rigour and scholarship with an open, friendly, and constructive approach. And, because philosophy advances through conversation, the large number of philosophy students here is in itself a major advantage!
