American Politics and Government, Rebuilding After a Crisis

All St Anne’s alumnae are warmly invited to join us for an online event featuring a talk from academic Daniel Rowe. Daniel recently joined St Anne’s College as the John G. Winant Lecturer in American Politics and Government. Daniel received his BA from the University of Sheffield and a MSt and DPhil in History from the University of Oxford. He has previously taught at the University of Sheffield, University of Warwick, and Birkbeck, University of London. His research concentrates on US political, urban, and economic history, particularly in the decades after the 1960s.

Daniel will be speaking about his research: ‘Rebuilding After a Crisis: Defaults, Deindustrialization, and Decline in 1970s and 1980s America’.

Between 1974 and 1984, the United States underwent an extended period of economic turmoil. Unemployment and inflation rates soared, some of America’s largest cities and corporations teetered on the edge of bankruptcy, and hundreds of thousands of blue-collar workers permanently lost their jobs. Yet a mere four years later, inflation and unemployment rates were falling, America’s largest industrial corporations were reporting huge profits, and municipalities whose decline had once seemed inexorable appeared to be in the midst of a revival.

This talk will tell the extraordinary story of the overlapping economic crises which engulfed America during the 1970s and 1980s and the policies and initiatives that prevented its largest cities and industries from collapsing. Drawing connections between the recent past and the present, Daniel will discuss the long-term consequences of decisions made by political and corporate leaders in the 1970s and 1980s and their connection to the economic crisis sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event will include a welcome and update from Helen King, Principal of St Anne’s College.
