The Governing Body of St Anne’s College invites applications for a Stipendiary Lecturer in History, tenable from 21 September 2026 for a fixed term of one year. This position is to cover the sabbatical leave of Professor Howard Hotson.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated, talented lecturer able to undertake six contact hours a week of tutorial and/or small class teaching averaged over the three eight-week terms of the academic year 2026–27. Duties will include setting and marking written work, assisting students with study skills, revision and essay writing, submitting reports, and providing assistance with undergraduate admissions if requested. Alongside a proven teaching ability you will have good communication skills and be able to participate in pastoral and organisation tasks within the College.

There are three fellows in History in St Anne’s: an early modern Europeanist (Howard Hotson), a 20th Century North Americanist (Uta Balbier) and a post-1750s environmental historian (Venus Bivar).This is reflected in an undergraduate admissions quota of 10 students per annum in History and its joint schools, making an undergraduate school of 30 over the three years of undergraduate study. The largest of the joint schools is History and Politics, and we currently also have students in History and Economics and in Ancient and Modern History. To this number is added students in History and Modern Languages, as well as an annual intake of two to three Visiting Students, making a total of around 35.
