Fernando read Biological Sciences (BSc, MSc) at the University of Salamanca, Spain, where he also obtained his PhD in Neuroscience, studying the neural circuits of auditory reflexes. In 2000 he moved to Oxford as a Marie Curie postdoctoral Fellow to work with Prof A J King on the development of spatial representations in the ferret Superior Colliculus.
Fernando is a Stipendiary Lecturer in Medicine. He teaches Neuroscience to biomedical and medical students. He is also a Departmental Lecturer with the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics.
Fernando researches different aspects of auditory perception by combining behavioural, electrophysiological and anatomical techniques. One of his main interests is studying experience-dependent neural plasticity exhibited by the auditory system. Neural plasticity underpins our stable perception in ever-changing situations through learning, although maladaptive processes to sensory loss can result in phantom perceptions like tinnitus.
