All-Steinway Piano Series – Julian Chan – 5.45pm – MOLT
Julian Chan is an outstanding, prizewinning pianist who recently gave a memorable performance in Oxford as part of the International Piano Series. For this recital he is offering two substantial piano works, each lasting around half an hour.
Martyn Harry introduces his piece ‘Automat Kalashnikova’, which is not only a reflection of his long-term work with Russian composers but of his time spent in the early nineties in Cologne, West Germany.
‘Automat Kalashnikova’ is in fact the sister piece of his work for oboe and piano, ‘Eau de Cologne’, which is being performed at 10.15am on Saturday morning as part of a research seminar in which he discusses both pieces, and how elements of Cologne’s geography and historical identity has shaped the composition of both pieces.
Julian Chan then concludes the recital with Tchaikovsky’s by turns lyrical, virtuosic and expansive G major piano sonata. Tchaikovsky completed it in a remarkable period of creativity at the same year as the Violin Concerto, the Fourth Symphony, and his opera ’Eugene Onegin’. Julian Chan has a particular affinity with Tchaikovsky’s music, having just recorded this sonata for Champs Hill records. This is a performance not to be missed by anyone interested in Romantic piano music.
Drinks will be served from 5pm in the MOLT foyer.
