St Anne’s College is delighted to announce the launch of The Jane Schulz-Hood Travel and Research Scholarship Fund. This fund has been instituted by the family of our alumna Jane E. Hood (1999) to honour and celebrate her life. Jane passed away in September 2019, aged 49, after an intense battle with cancer. The fund will provide travel and research grants for student field work and will make a meaningful impact on the areas which were closest to Jane’s heart. These include advancing the understanding of ecology, the environment, society, or global health and equity issues – such as topics related to water, wildlife, and population studies.
Her husband Christian writes: “Jane was remembered by her friends at Oxford for her caring and positive attitude. For her, education was always a top priority. This included learning as much as possible about other cultures. Not surprisingly, Jane loved travelling. She was always very respectful towards others and cherished being in nature. She therefore was interested in the environment and supported initiatives that look after wildlife, water and education.
After graduating from Oxford with a BA in Geography, Jane moved back to her native London and qualified with top marks as a solicitor. She pursued a career as a M&A lawyer at a big City firm. We met studying at London Business School and started a family. After a few years we moved to Munich and Jane continued in corporate M&A at her law firm’s Munich office. After the birth of our second child, she stopped working at her law firm in 2009 to spend more time with the children.
Through this fund, we hope that, by providing financial support for research and travel, students at St Anne’s will be able to explore areas that were important to Jane. This will be a wonderful opportunity to give back and to have a legacy for Jane. Her sense of humor was outstanding, so was her intellect, and she was beautiful in every way.”
The goals of the fund are fully aligned with the mission of St Anne’s: to help students understand the world and change it for the better. We look forward to making the first grants from the fund which will be awarded annually
