St Anne’s Honorary Fellow and Nobel Prize Winner, Mario Vargas Llosa, has died at 89

We were sorry to see the news that Mario Vargas Llosa — described by the BBC as a “giant of Latin-American literature” — has died at the age of 89. Mario was our visiting Weidenfeld Professor in 2004 and was also an Honorary Fellow of St Anne’s.

Mario Vargas Llosa won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010 and published more than 50 works, many of which were translated into multiple language. He is the last great star of the Latin American Boom literary movement and will be remembered for his vivid depictions of authoritarianism on the continent.
