Research

Peter was a Fellow of St Anne’s from 1982 until 2023, when he retired and became a Senior Research Fellow. He has two related research interests:

  • the interface between political ideas and English politics, c. 1850 – 1895
  • the evolution of Western European and British ideas, including historiography, from the Enlightenment to the present.

His current research commitments focus on Max Weber and the history of history (a larger category than that of historical writing) from the Renaissance to the present day. The attraction of both fields lies in their combination of breadth and depth.
