Welcome to St. Anne’s!
We have two library buildings which you can access 24/7 with your fob. Librarians are around from 9am-5pm on weekdays. If we aren’t at one of the staff desks, we will try to leave a sign telling you where we are so that you can come and find us.
The libraries are for silent study. Respect other library users by keeping your phone on silent and all noise to a minimum, and maintain silence while waiting for tutorials within the Library.
Conversation is allowed in the Group Study Rooms and Outreach Room in the Tim Gardam Building. Be mindful that voice on the stairs and corridors can be heard within the reading rooms, so please take all phone calls outside the building.
Bottled water is allowed. You can find a drinking fountain and bottle refill station in the basement of the Tim Gardam Building or safe drinking water from the taps in the Hartland House bathrooms.
You may also take a hot drink in a travel mug with a sealable lid. The Bodleian Libraries sell a branded ‘KeepCup’ which you can take into some other libraries as well. All other Food & Drink is not allowed in the Library, but may be consumed in the Outreach Room or the Rooftop and Sunken Gardens.
We clear desks each morning to ensure that there are free spaces for people to work at and that books not in use can be re-shelved. Please do not leave belongings on desks overnight or unattended for extended periods during the day.
Hartland House was the first College building on site, housing the original library in one room, and now contains our books in the Arts and Humanities.
For your time here, the relevant collections and shelfmarks in this building are likely to be English Literature (800-829) and English History (942). The Jenkins collection (Jenkins 000-999) on the ground floor also contains a wide variety of Ecclesiastical, British, and European History.
Floorplans and shelfmark guides are posted on the notice board in the entrance area and the doors to individual reading rooms to help you find your way to the books you need, and library staff are always happy to help.
The Tim Gardam Building was completed in 2017 and largely contains our books in the Sciences and Social Sciences.
The relevant collections and shelfmarks in this building are Religious History, including Witchcraft (270-299), Cultural History (300-306), and History of Education (370-372).
Floorplans and shelfmark guides are posted on the glass in the entrance area and on the doors to individual reading rooms to help you find your way to the books you need, and library staff are always happy to help.
SOLO (http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk) is the library catalogue for the University, including St. Anne’s, and it searches all libraries and collections in Oxford by default.
Choose ‘St Anne’s College Library’ from the drop-down menu to find books that are in College, or choose ‘Oxford Collections’ to see all or another library eg. ‘Radcliffe Camera (incl. History Faculty Library)’
Enter keywords to make your search, then click ‘Find & Request’ on a result to see where it is. All St. Anne’s books will be shown as in ‘Hartland House’ or ‘Tim Gardam Building’. The shelfmark (eg. 372.419 ANN:REE) tells you where it is on the shelves. If a book is on the shelf, it should say ‘Available’ or ‘Item in Place’. Books that are out on loan will have ‘Check Availability’ or an ‘In Use Until’ date listed.
The relevant collections at St. Anne’s will in the English literature and history sections in the Main Library room in Hartland House.

We have Self-Issue machines in the foyers of both library buildings. You can borrow most of the books on the shelves but those with orange ‘Confined’ labels may only be read within the Library. This will include many from your reading lists.
To borrow:
There is sometimes a short delay in deactivating the security tags on the machine after successfully issuing a book. If the gate triggers after doing so, just try to issue it again at the machine and it should be fine.
If a book title appears in red on the screen with an error message, doesn’t appear at all, or there is an issue with your card or the machine, just ask us for help. If we’re not around, note the problem in the notepad provided. You may then take the book from the Library and we will sort the problem later, as long as it is not ‘Confined’.
To access the University’s electronic resources, including most e-books and online journals, you will need to go to one of the Bodleian Libraries and use their PCs. They will not be available at St. Anne’s or on your own laptops and device.
A smaller selection of Open Access material may be accessible through SOLO when you are logged on to the Library PCs in College and some material may be available through SOLO, if your home institution happens to has a subscription.
To use the PCs in College, log on with your VPO username eg. st-annes\vpo-46 and password which has been provided. Library staff can remind you, if you lose these details.
The printers are called ‘Follow-Me’ printer in the drop-down menu. Once you’ve sent something to print, just go over and tap your Bodleian Card to log in. Our paper is A4 so double check that your document is set to this size. Please take note of copyright regulations and consider the environment before printing large amounts.
You can connect to WiFi in the Library and around College using the OWL log-in credentials provided to you. If your home institution uses eduroam, you can access that in College and many places throughout Oxford. You can also sign up for a free TheCloud account if all else fails, though connectivity is more patchy.
You will need to return any books you have borrowed by 5pm on Friday 8th August. You don’t need to do anything at the Self-Issue Machine to return books. Just leave them in the designated area for the building they were borrowed from and Library Staff will check them in for you.
Please return books with shelfmarks in the 700s-900s, 340s (Law), ANNE, TE, TR, Welfare, Jenkins, MR, RP, and DVD to the staff desk in Hartland House.
Books with shelfmarks in the 000s-330s, 350s-600s, Stack, and PER should be left in the book returns box in the foyer of the Tim Gardam Building.
