Women and Non-Binary People in STEM

For the last three years St Anne’s College has ran a Women and Non-Binary People in STEM Programme, aimed at supporting young women and non-binary individuals who are making applications to study STEM programmes at University. Previous years have been run with the collaboration of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Since 2024/25 we have run this programme in collaboration with St Catherine’s and Mansfield Colleges, the University of Oxford.

The programme provides students with the opportunity to hear about how our STEM courses are run at Oxford, engage with academic taster sessions and talk to current Oxford students.

Structure

Our Women and Non-Binary People in STEM programme consists of a launch workshop covering ‘Applying to Oxford’ held at the beginning of each calendar year. The launch session is followed by individual sessions on each STEM subject offered at St Anne’s, St Catherine’s and Mansfield Colleges. Sessions will be led by a college tutor or faculty member and will cover subject insights, an introduction to the subject at undergraduate level, a short academic taster session, and Q&A with current students.

Later in the year each College hosts their own visit day for Women and Non-Binary students, giving students the opportunity to visit the University of Oxford, and find out more about the University’s teaching style.

Current subjects covered in this programme are: Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Earth Sciences, Human Sciences, Materials Sciences, Medicine, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology.

The first part of this programme is non-selective, and open to all Women and Non-Binary students in Years 11 and 12. Signs ups are taken via Microsoft Forms from November each year, and details will be available on this website.

Students who wish to attend one of the taster days will be invited to do so following their attendance at one or more of the online sessions, and will be contacted by one of St Anne’s, St Catherine’s, or Mansfield Colleges directly.
