Library Services

The College library offers a range of services to help you including: purchasing books for your courses; book fetching through our Click & Collect service; providing scans; postal loans for when you cannot come to Oxford; comb-binding for your thesis and other documents.

Suggest a Book to Buy

We accept suggestions of books (or DVDs) that support Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. The book doesn’t necessarily have to be on a reading list; it can be something you’ve read a good review of. We may also accept suggestions of books of more popular nature e.g. good quality novels, poetry, prose, popular science, social sciences, history, or self-help books.

To suggest a title for purchase, please fill out the Book Suggestion Form, or send an email to Sally Speirs, giving the details of the book, your course details and tutor’s name, and the date by when you need the book.

Sally aims to order books on the same day that the request is received and will send you a response to let you know what’s happening with your request. If you have any questions, just send her an email.

Click & Collect

You can use the Click & Collect service to request books ahead of time, or if you are having trouble finding the books or accessing the shelves. The librarians will fetch the books for you and leave them ready for you to issue. To make a Click & Collect request:
  1.  Sign in to SOLO with your Oxford Single Sign-On (e.g. sann1234)
  2.  Find the book(s) you want to read in St Anne’s College Library.
  3.  Expand the record and click on the green ‘Request Options’ button. Try to request one which says ‘Item in Place’. If it has an ‘In Use Until’ date, you can still request it, but will need to wait for someone else to return it first.
  4.  You will receive an automated email when one of the librarians has fetched it.
  5.  You can collect the book from a trolley in the foyer of the Tim Gardam Building or the shelf at the staff desk in Hartland House.
Books requested via Click & Collect are not issued to you automatically. You will need to check them out at the self-issue machine when you collect them. Books on the open shelves in other libraries cannot be requested via Click & Collect. You need to visit the library and fetch it yourself, though you can use the ‘Request Options’ for books held in storage or offsite.

Scanning Service

St Anne’s College members may request a scan of an article, chapter, or up to 10% (whichever is greater) of a book or journal held by the College library. If you’re not sure exactly which chapter you need, email the Library and ask us to send you a scan of the contents page. You can also use our machines to scan books yourself, within the same copyright limits. Visit our Printing & IT pages for more details.

To request a scan, please fill in the Scan Request and Copyright Declaration Form. You must enter your email and confirm that you have read and agree to the copyright declaration for the request to be fulfilled. Library staff will then scan it for you and send it to your St Anne’s email.

The Bodleian Libraries also offer a scanning service via SOLO. Clicking the ‘Scan & Deliver’ button, even when next to St Anne’s College Library books, will send a request directly to the relevant Bodleian Libraries team and be dealt with there.

Binding Service

We offer a comb binding service for your thesis and other documents e.g. music scores. It costs £2.50 per copy charged to your battels. We can usually have it for you within the same working day, but ask that you arrange an appointment in advance, either in person or by e-mailing us at library@st-annes.ox.ac.uk.

Postal Loans

If you have a residency waiver or can’t make it to Oxford at the moment, we may be able to post books to you. We will not usually send books via postal loan during the normal course of Vacation. To request a postal loan:

  1. Check to see if there is an e-book available on SOLO before making a postal loan request and remember that we offer a scanning service if you only need to read one chapter.
  2. Complete a Click & Collect request for the books as normal.
  3. Email your postal address to library@st-annes.ox.ac.uk and let us know that you’ve placed your requests via ‘Click & Collect’

Please limit your requests to 2-3 books at a time. We will not be able to post every book on a long reading list to you, so try to concentrate your requests on the most essential texts. If you are not sure which titles are the most essential to read, ask your tutor for advice.

We will not charge you postage for books sent to you, but if we recall a book from you for another student we would ask you to pay for the postage and to return the book promptly.
