English Reunion

Reunion for those that studied English or a degree that was combined with English

We are delighted to announce that a full programme of talks has now been released for the upcoming English Reunion, due to be held at St Anne’s College on Saturday 1st June. The day will run as follows:

Dr Sian Gronlie, ‘Samson and Delilah in Iceland’

Biblical translation didn’t start with the Reformation but flourished throughout medieval Europe, even as far afield as Iceland. This talk explores the reception of the story of Samson in Iceland and its incorporation into the vernacular tradition of the sagas.

Professor Freya Johnston, ‘Hazel Eardley-Wilmot and English at St Anne’s’

Some reflections on College Library archive material that relates to the graduate after whom one of our English fellowships is named, and on the practice of commemorating tutors, students, and the ways in which they once taught and studied our subject.

Adam Dumbleton: ‘Verse with Prose in Early Modern England’

When Philip Sidney described authors who “mingled prose and verse” in his Defence of Poesy (c. 1580), the word we now use to discuss such mixed-form texts — ‘prosimetrum’ — was not available to him. I will discuss some of the more unusual, experimental instances of early modern prosimetrum, and what they might tell us about period attitudes to literary form in contexts as diverse as political discourse, saints’ lives, and romance.

Dr Bysshe Inigo Coffey: ‘Victorian Shelleyolatry and Shelleyphobia’.

Professor Matthew Reynolds, ‘Prismatic Jane Eyre: an Experiment in the Study of Translations’

Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre is not only a novel in English; it has been translated more than 600 times into at least 68 languages. How can we grasp this phenomenon? Should it change what we think of the novel as being, and how we read it?

Dr Tinashe Mushakavanhu: ‘Photography in African Literature’
